Take action: Tell Army Corps to nix PolyMet wetlands permit

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have found that PolyMet would pollute water and violate Fond du Lac's water quality standards. I support the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa’s assessment that the PolyMet Northmet Clean Water Act Section 404 permit should not be reissued.

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is a sovereign government, with federally recognized water quality standards. The comprehensive scientific information presented by the Band, as well as the independent scientific reports and recommendation presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, make clear that the PolyMet Section 404 permit would violate the Band’s water quality standards for mercury and specific conductance.

The evidence is clear: methylmercury released by the disturbance of wetlands would travel far downstream and be magnified in the food chain. In addition, sulfate and other pollutants that increase specific conductance released as a result of the proposed PolyMet mine would damage wild rice and threaten reintroduction of sturgeon.

Because the PolyMet Northmet Section 404 permit as proposed would violate the Band’s water quality standards, under the law it cannot be re-issued.
